Resume Format With No Experience (2026)

With no jobs and no internships, the resume has to be built from coursework, projects, and transferable evidence — which is a real resume, not a placeholder.

Who this is for: Students, career starters, and anyone applying for their first role with no formal work history — including people re-entering work after a long gap.

Section order, top to bottom

Order matters more than styling. Both an ATS parser and a recruiter reading for six seconds weight the top of the page hardest, so the strongest evidence goes first.

  1. 1
    Contact details
Name, city, one phone number, one professional email, LinkedIn URL. No photo, no age, no marital status, no full postal address — Indian templates often include these and they cost you space while adding nothing an ATS reads.
  2. 2
    Summary (3 lines)
Here a summary earns its place, because there is no work history to speak for you. State what you are trained in, what you have built, and the role you want. Specific, not aspirational.
  3. 3
    Education
Degree, institution, year, and — unusually — relevant coursework. With no experience, naming four or five directly relevant courses is legitimate evidence, not padding.
  4. 4
    Projects and coursework
The core of this format. Class assignments, self-directed builds, and course capstones all count. Describe them exactly as you would a job: what the problem was, what you did, what resulted.
  5. 5
Volunteer work and positions of responsibility
Club roles, event organising, tutoring, community work. These are real evidence of coordination and follow-through — write them with the same structure as work bullets.
  6. 6
    Skills
Split technical from transferable. Transferable claims must be backed by something above — "coordinated a 40-person event" earns "coordination"; a bare list does not.
  7. 7
    Certifications
Completed courses with substance. One finished, project-backed certification beats six enrolled-in ones.

What to leave out

  • The phrase "no experience" anywhere on the page — the format already handles it.
  • An empty "Work Experience" heading with nothing under it.
  • Apologetic framing ("although I lack experience…").
  • Filler hobbies chosen to occupy space.

Terms an ATS looks for

Use the ones that genuinely apply to you, worded the way the job description words them. Matching is largely literal, so a synonym often does not count.

Getting this format right

  • Give projects the same bullet structure as jobs — action, method, result. Recruiters read the shape before the content.
  • Relevant coursework is legitimate here specifically because there is no work history competing for the space.
  • One page, and let it breathe. A sparse, confident page reads better than a padded one.
  • Apply the job description’s vocabulary to your project descriptions — that is what the parser matches on.

Common mistakes

  • Inventing or inflating experience — it collapses in the first interview and is not worth the risk.
  • Leaving a visibly empty experience section rather than restructuring the format.
  • Listing soft skills with no evidence anywhere on the page to support them.
  • Writing a summary that describes what you want rather than what you can do.

Resume Format With No Experience — FAQ

What is the correct resume format with no experience?

Use this section order: Contact details → Summary → Education → Projects and coursework → Volunteer work and positions of responsibility → Skills → Certifications. Here a summary earns its place, because there is no work history to speak for you. State what you are trained in, what you have built, and the role you want. Specific, not aspirational.

What should I leave off?

The phrase "no experience" anywhere on the page — the format already handles it. An empty "Work Experience" heading with nothing under it. Apologetic framing ("although I lack experience…"). Each of these costs space without adding anything a recruiter or an ATS actually reads.

How long should it be?

One page. Two pages are justified only with several years of relevant experience — and even then, density beats length. Give projects the same bullet structure as jobs — action, method, result. Recruiters read the shape before the content.

Will this format pass an ATS?

Yes, provided you keep it single-column with standard headings and submit a text-based PDF. You can check how your own resume actually scores — free, in about 30 seconds — with HAMRA's ATS resume checker.

Now fill it in for your role

This page covers structure. The role guides cover what actually goes inside — the keywords and impact bullets recruiters screen for.
