Fresher Resume Format (2026)

Section order, top to bottom

Order matters more than styling. Both an ATS parser and a recruiter reading for six seconds weight the top of the page hardest, so the strongest evidence goes first.

   Contact details

   Name, city, one phone number, one professional email, LinkedIn URL. No photo, no age, no marital status, no full postal address — Indian templates often include these and they cost you space while adding nothing an ATS reads.

   Career objective (2 lines, optional)

   Only worth including if it names the specific role and what you bring. "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation" is filler that wastes your most valuable lines — cut it or make it specific.

   Education

   Goes high, because it is your strongest credential. Degree, institution, year of completion, and CGPA/percentage if it is 7.0+/70%+. Include Class XII and X only if you are within a year of graduating.

   Projects

   The section that actually differentiates freshers. Two to four projects, each with what you built, the stack you used, and what it does. Academic and personal projects both count — link the repo or a live demo.

   Internships and training

   Company, role, dates, and two bullets on what you actually did. A six-week internship with concrete output beats a six-month one described vaguely.

   Technical skills

   Grouped by type (languages, tools, frameworks). List only what you could answer questions about in an interview — every line here is a question you are inviting.

   Certifications and achievements

   Relevant certifications, hackathon placements, scholarships, published work. Skip participation certificates.

What to leave out

• A photograph — it is not read by ATS and introduces bias concerns in most markets.
• Date of birth, father’s name, marital status, nationality — Indian template conventions that no recruiter screens on.
• "References available on request" — assumed, and it wastes a line.
• Declaration and signature at the bottom — a formality from print-era bio-data, not a resume.
• Hobbies, unless one is genuinely relevant to the role.

Terms an ATS looks for

Use the ones that genuinely apply to you, worded the way the job description words them. Matching is largely literal, so a synonym often does not count.

Getting this format right

• One page. A fresher resume that runs to two pages signals padding, not depth.
• Order projects by relevance to the job, not chronology — the most relevant one goes first.
• Quantify anything you honestly can: "handled 200+ records", "team of 4", "reduced manual entry by half".
• Mirror the exact words from the job description — if it says "SQL", write "SQL", not "database querying".
• Save as PDF unless the application explicitly asks for .doc — PDF preserves your layout through the parser.

Common mistakes

• Leading with a generic objective instead of education or projects.
• Listing every subject studied — the degree already implies the syllabus.
• Using a two-column or heavily designed template that ATS parsers read out of order.
• Claiming skills at "expert" level with a rating bar — parsers ignore it and interviewers test it.
